Risk - Anaïs Nin

And then the day came,
when the risk
to remain
tight in a bud
was more painful
than the risk
it took
to Blossom.

Anaïs Nin

Review this poem

On taking risks

"Part of the process of change is to work to share who we really are as men. We live in a society where, for men, being tough, in control and competitive (by definition, against others and other gender stereotypes are qualities that are rewarded in when we work and play.)

The expression, "men have a lot of buddies, but no real friends," can be a place to start. We need to be open and honest about...yes....about how we feel.

How do our experiences affect our lives?
What are our hopes, fears, doubts and joys regarding our relationships, parents, school, work etc.?
Share your point of view with us.

Adolescent Risk-Taking

Do you feel pressured to make risky choices by friends?
Do you rush into decisions?
Do you think it is uncool to try things in a safe manner?
Are dangerous risks more exciting? Do they feel more like you?
Do you make dangerous choices to show others?
Does it feel as though it's happening "in a dream" when you make dangerous choices?

Juno - Fun in taking risks

Fran Watson

"If at first you don’t succeed, think how many people you’ve made happy." -H. Duane Black
Fran Watson has created a web page for the benefit od others. Fran offers "Hints, Tips, Resources, Poems, Articles and More".

The following text seems to sum up Fran's motivations:

"This world needs what you have to give. Open up the areas of your being; expose them to yourself - to others. You are valuable. You are unique. You have much to give. Do not be afraid to give it.

As we risk ourselves, we grow. Each new experience is a risk: we can try, and maybe fail, and as a result, grow - or hold back and stagnate.

You have the potential to be anything you want to be! You are free to choose. You are limited only by your fears. Let your dreams take over, fly with the eagles, soar into life, the world is waiting for you!"

Risk poem

"A friend of mine found this poem. I don't know who authored it, but it's good. As we get older many of us stop taking risks. It may be safe but, but you may sacrifice your freedom."

Teenagers and Risk-taking at Camp

"Adolescence is a time when young people experiment with many aspects of life - testing how things fit together and using this process to define and shape how they think and how they fit into the world. This is a time when teens are learning how to become their "own person." Teens are involved in risk-taking that is not always harmful. Frequently, risk-taking in teens is a normal, healthy, developmental behavior for adolescents..." (read more)

Now is your chance to do that. It's time to learn about Time.

How Time Works

"Time is something that most of us take for granted. Have you ever thought about why, for example, there are 12 months in a year? Why are there 30 days in September? Why are there time zones and what's with daylight-saving time? Why are there 86,400 seconds in a day? ..."

Read the article by Marshall Brain and then tell us what you have learned and what you think about it.

Open Question

I'm a night person, how do I become a day person?

I have a child and a house to take care of but I have always been a night person. I need to have all the energy I feel at night, during the day. How do I do that?

I wake up around 7 or 8 and go to bed around 10 or 11 but I feel lazy during the day.

At night around 5 or 6 I start feeling like I am wide awake and can clean my house and play with my daughter and am alot happier.

How do I reverse it? Please anything you know can help.

I want to feel how I do at night during the day.

PLEASE HELP!

What's in a name? Quiz

Here's a quiz that appears on a American Website. We certainly need one in English about Israeli names.

How about trying to answer the questions on the quiz? You can also write a few lines to comment on the game.

Wouldn't you like to find out if there actually is a quiz on Israeli names in English? Let us know if you find one (or more). I will add the link(s).

Well...While you are at it, why don't you write a quiz on Israeli names in English? I will gladly post it here or in our school's website?

I'm looking forward to reading your comments here.

Stereotypes with names

Provided By: kevjumba

This is kevjumba's introduction to this video clip:

"This is another funny blog about race, but this time its specifically about names. Each race has its own type of names given at birth so my friend and i decided to talk about them. We understand that not all the names we named make sense haha but i think the viewers will understanding what were going for. oh and if you're wondering, i'm chinese and i live in a very diverse part of the United States.
hope you guys enjoy and if you find it funny, please leave some comments"

(Since this blog is part of our EFL class, let me ask an annoying question first:

Have you noticed any grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc mistakes? Tell us in class. Oh! I'm sorry... We EFL teachers tend to ask these (and other) questions. Kevjumba has posted a video on this, too. No harm intended, Kevjumba)

And now, let's get some work done here:

I. Read some of the the comments and responses
on the youtube site.

II. Answer: Which comment (if any) do you identify with?

III. Add your own comment here and, if you want to, on the you tube site too.

Incidentally, we will let these two guys know that we have discussed their video clip both here and in class and invite them to comment and respond (they might choose to do so)

IV. Kevjumba

a. Learn more about kevjumba

b Watch one or more of his videos. Write a response & comment here

c. Check the number of viewers kevjumba has had. What do you think about that? Why has he got such numbers? Write a response & comment here.

V. The clip.

a. Why do you think it is important for these two guys to talk about names the way they do?

b. Does the clip raise any new questions? If yes, which one (s)? Would you care to answer it / them?

c.. How is this video clip relevant to what we are studying?
